Target Audience for thrillers

Finding the target audience for thrillers as a whole is very hard because of all the sub genres that attract different audiences. However most thrillers arnt easy watchers. They can be complicated meaning a more matured mind would understand them better then a younger person. Men seem to enjoy films with tension more then women however this is a stereotype but thats what makes target audiences. also most of the sub genres for thrillers are targeted more on men. for example action, crime, horror, sci fi... i would say the target audience is 18-55 mostly male and well educated.

180 degree rule

In this picture you can see the green area of 180 degrees were you are allowed to film. If you go past the 180 degree area the actors will switch round, this is shown on the diagram above. this will cause the audience to be confused and could break the continuity.

Continuity

continuity editing is a technique to putt pieces of footage together in a smooth way giving them a logical coherence. This will mean the transitions from one shot to another are smoother giving it a journey feel which the audience can easily watch and understand. A good way of achieving this is by using match on action.
match on action is when you connect two different views of the same action at the same moment in the movement without giving it a stop and start feel. the key is to make the shots look smooth and uninterrupted. This gives the audience the feel that they are following the action.
another example of a technique that helps ensure continuity is using diegetic sounds. These are sounds that are happening in the story. This keeps logical coherence because it relates to whats happening on screen.

prelim task

Own analysis on our preliminary task

Requirements of task
  • 180 degree rule
  • match on action shot
  • shot reverse shot
  • over the shoulder shot
I will talk about these skills in a later post.

Our production included all of these requirements using good quality examples. I believe our final product was a good reflection on all the camera and editing skills we have learnt in the past four weeks.
I wouldn't say this task went very smoothly as we didn't plan every thing ahead, this might be something i would change if i done this task agin. However there we were organized, as we all knew what we were doing and what we needed to do. What we organized didn't always go to plan, for example one of my two group members was absent for the last two weeks which was a very important time. also we had a few technical difficulties when were editing, some of these were beyond are control meaning we had to change computers, but some were due to us renaming them after capturing them this meant that when we changed computers some of the shots werent saved or named. Next time i import film on too final cut pro i will make sure i name it at the right time as this will give me more time to edit.

Info on se7en

Director: David Fincher
Writer: Andrew Kevin Walker
Release date: 1995
Actors: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow

Synopsis: A film about two homicide detectives' desperate hunt for a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world's ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins. The movie takes us from the tortured remains of one victim to the next as the sociopathic "John Doe" sermonizes to Detectives Sommerset and Mills -- one sin at a time. The sin of Gluttony comes first and the murderer's terrible capacity is graphically demonstrated in the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir. The seasoned and cultured Sommerset researches the Seven Deadly Sins in an effort to understand the killer's modus operandi while green Detective Mills scoffs at his efforts to get inside the mind of a killer... Written by Mark Fleetwood

...a broad genre of literature, film, gaming and television. It includes numerous, often overlapping sub-genres.

starting filming

We started using the cameras today. This was a very exiting and educational experience. We were told to make a short journey using all the shots we had learnt in the previous lesson. Before we went we were briefed on how to use the cameras and tripods. I already knew a bit about the cameras so I had an advantage.

We set out and decided to show the journey of gervais escaping from a makeshift prison. I believe we worked well as a team as we all had our fair share on the camera. We used many shots which were effective and set the tension. I think they all work well together to make a good end product.

There were a few mistakes which could easily be edited out. They were many due to acting and laughing and the lack of timing. There were a few shots were the camera wasn’t very steady this is because they were hand held shots. It made me think how hard it is to film anything professional and how long it would take. As it took us 45 mins to film 3 minutes.
